Also Monday, Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers were called to assist with a rescue near Pyramid Peak in Rio Blanco County, where a 30-year-old man reportedly fell about 50 feet in a rocky area. Rio Blanco County search and rescue teams used a helicopter to extract the man before Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers could reach the remote area. The condition of the man wasn't available Monday evening.
Steamboat Springs One man was killed, and a second person was injured in a head-on collision near Toponas on Monday afternoon.
Emergency responders were called to the accident at about 5:15 p.m., and crews freed one of the trapped victims from a car at about 5:45 p.m.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said the identity of the man was still unknown at 8:15 p.m. Ryg said he was in the process of transporting the man's body to Yampa Valley Funeral Home.
The man was driving a silver Honda coupe southbound on Colorado Highway 131 when it collided with a Ford minivan traveling the opposite direction, Ryg said. The man who died was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Colorado State Patrol troopers were still on scene investigating the accident late Monday night, and the highway was closed for several hours as crews worked at the scene. Motorists were diverted on Routt County Road 6 during that time.
