Snowmass, Aspen skier rankings slip

— Snowmass slipped a bit and Aspen Mountain tanked it in the annual ski resort rankings by Ski Magazine.

Snowmass fell from fourth last season to sixth in this year's popularity contest. Aspen Mountain fell out of favor, dropping from seventh in last season's preseason poll to 14th.

If there is any consolation for Aspenites, Vail failed to crack the top two for the first time in a decade.

Aspen Skiing Co. officials aren't losing sleep over the results.

"Those who end up on top seem to celebrate and trumpet it. Those who don't move on. It's not going to make it or break it," said Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle.

Ski's ranking are based on a reader survey. Good results make for fun bragging rights. The results don't attempt to explain why resorts rise or fall from one year to the next. Perhaps most Ski readers were priced out of Aspen last season because of the recession.

Deer Valley, Utah, retained the top spot in 2009. Whistler-Blackcomb, B.C., moved up to second from third while Vail slipped to third from second.
