When complete, the new Millennium Bank building will be harmonious with existing buildings in Wildhorse Marketplace.
Steamboat Springs Concrete forms are being installed in the foundation, and the new $2.5 million home of Millennium Bank is projected to open in Wildhorse Marketplace early next summer.
The bank, which opened in July 2006, has been operating in a nearby storefront in Wildhorse. Bank President Paul Clavadetscher said the plan always has been to transition into a permanent facility, but the day arrived sooner than expected thanks to business volumes.
The Steamboat Springs bank is one of six operated by Edwards-based Millennium Bankcorp. Other locations are in Breckenridge, Vail, Winter Park/Frasier and Englewood, as well as in Edwards.
General contractor Holmquist-Lorenz Construction was to have begun work on the new building in mid-July. Assistant Vice President for Administrative Services Mary Simmins said the delay won't push back opening day.
"We're still looking at opening in June," Simmins said. "We'll still have hands-on personal service, but in addition to offering the ability to sit down at a table and do transactions, we'll offer the added convenience of a teller line, safe deposit boxes and a drive-through banking."
The 10,654-square-foot building will be devoted exclusively to the bank's use. It is being built on a 1-acre triangular lot immediately west of the movie theater. The site originally was anticipated to house a freestanding restaurant when Wildhorse Marketplace came through the planning process in 2003.
In accordance with planning approvals, the building was designed by architectural firm Eric Smith and Associates to fit in with the mass and scale of existing buildings in the commercial center. Simmins said corrugated steel panels on the bank building would be a deep red color that emulates the corroded steel on existing buildings without actually corroding.
Clavadetscher said the bank was mindful of giving the local economy a boost when it decided to take on the project this year. Travis Holmquist, of Holmquist-Lorenz, estimated that when subcontractors are included, more than 100 people would work on the project.
