Fewer than 600 people younger than 45 have voted

Residents younger than 45 account for just one-fifth of the ballots cast in Routt County's 2009 election, even though about half of the county's registered voters are in that age group. The discrepancy has caused some to worry that the county's first election conducted exclusively with mail-in ballots may not be conducive to young voters.

Sailors volleyball falls at districts

Steamboat Springs High School started out strong but lost to Montezuma-Cortez and Mullen today, eliminating its chances to advance to next weekend's regional tournament. The Sailors finished 15-6 on the season.

Standoff ends without injury

A police standoff that lasted nearly four hours early Friday on Laurel Lane ended peacefully after police broke down a door and arrested a 33-year-old Steamboat Springs man. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of domestic violence on Laurel Lane at about 12:45 Friday morning.

Steamboat briefs: Fire department urges residents to check detectors

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue is urging residents to use Sunday's daylight saving time change as a cue to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Just as residents set their clocks back an hour each autumn, it is recommended that the batteries in detectors be changed once a year.

But this time, the service will come without a six-figure price tag for the local business community. Like a snowball rolling down a hill, the Steamboat Springs High School football team is nearly impossible to stop when it gets going. Steamboat found that momentum and rhythm early, kept building it up and turned Friday's game against Buena Vista into a complete 58-13 avalanche.
