Sailors in consolation round

One doubles team, one singles player still on the court in Pueblo

— The Sailors tennis team is now fully dependent on the consolation bracket for any placement at state.

The Steamboat Springs High School team is playing at the Class 4A tournament in Pueblo. The No. 4 doubles team of freshman Gabri Erspamer and sophomore Kyle Rogers won its first two matches Thursday but lost 6-2, 6-3 today to David Karpas and Alec Lee of Kent Denver.

The pair will have a chance to play in the consolation bracket this afternoon. If they win, they'll play Saturday in the consolation finals for third place.

No. 1 singles player Jamey Swiggart lost in the first round Thursday but had an opportunity to play in the consolation bracket today. He lost 6-3, 6-4 to Jon Moore from Cheyenne Mountain.

No. 2 singles player Keegan Burger lost in the second round but won a playback match against Alex Beaman of D'Evelyn today 6-2, 6-1. He'll continue play today in the consolation semifinals.

The rest of the Sailors team lost in the first day and didn't get a chance to play back in the consolation round.
