Hayden football wins, volleyball loses

— The Hayden High School football team held on for a 7-6 win Friday at Rangely. Rangely scored early to take a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before Hayden bounced back in the second quarter. Rene Valdez's extra point proved to be the difference maker. "It was an ugly one," Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. "But we got away with one."

The Hayden volleyball team fell, 3-1, to Rangely. Tigers coach Greg Johnson said that despite the loss, he was as pleased as he has been all year with the effort, particularly the team's serve-receive and blocking. Hayden plays at 7:30 p.m. today at home against Baggs, Wyo.

One paragraph for the Tiger football team? Good effort, Today! Soroco got 11 paragraphs, One Steamboat player got 9 paragraphs by himself! (Not to take anything away from Soroco or Steamboat, both were great performances)

There was a little more than Rene's extra point happening at Rangely Friday night. The Tiger's were without their starting quarterback, Craig Medvesk, out with a concussion. Freshman Mark Doolin filled in and did quite well, especially in the fourth quarter, making a good throw on a critical 3rd down to seal the victory.

How about the Tiger's defense, who after giving up a short field touchdown on the first drive, shut the Panthers out for the remaining 46 minutes.

Then there was the 15 minutes the entire stadium waited to see if Hayden freshman Ryan Domson was ok.

I guess I shouldn't complain about the coverage in the paper since two of the Tiger's games were not mentioned at all this year.
