Interest high for ski swap Oct. 16

— Nobody is more excited for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's annual Ski & Sports Swap than Rick DeVos.

But DeVos and many others in Steamboat Springs will have to wait one more week for the Oct. 16 sale to begin.

"The city did us a favor this week by putting up a banner over Main Street," said DeVos, the Winter Sports Club's executive director. "But then people started coming into the office thinking the sale is this weekend. I've had to tell them we are still a week out."

The annual Ski & Sports Swap is scheduled for Oct. 16 and 17 at Steamboat Springs Middle School. He said a banner put up earlier this week caused a bit of confusion. The banner was taken down, but DeVos fears that some people still will try to drop stuff off this Friday and that some will show up for the sale.

"I'm thrilled to see early interest in the event and happy that people have been coming into the club's offices to pick up tags and the paperwork needed to sell items at the sale, " DeVos said.

He said he hopes that will build excitement for the event and speed things up when drop-off takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the middle school Oct. 16.

The event will begin with the early bird sale at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Shoppers can pay $5 and enter the sale and have the first opportunity to buy used and new items. Shoppers younger than 18 can enter the sale that night for free.

On Saturday, there is no admission fee, and the doors open at 8 a.m. The sale will continue until 3 p.m. Consignment pickup will take place from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.

DeVos said there would be plenty of ski and snowboard items to choose from during the two-day event. But in the past, the sale also has featured bikes, hockey gear and other items.

"This sale started as a ski event, but it's really grown into so much more," DeVos said.

Proceeds from sale will benefit the athletes of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. But DeVos said the event not only raises money for the club athletes, but also provides a place for the community to find a few bargains and gives people a chance to sell equipment they aren't using.
