Steamboat Springs It was another game and another monster win for the Soroco football team. The Rams bumped their record to 5-0 with a 64-14 pasting of Plateau Valley on Saturday.
"It was a great team effort," Soroco coach David Bruner said. "We played really well."
Soroco scored early and easily, but one problem started to emerge.
In the first three games of the season, senior quarterback Cody Miles firmly established himself as the team's go-to offensive weapon, racking up nearly 20 touchdowns.
But for the second straight week, senior tailback Alex Estes emerged as the primary star.
He returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Rams defense stuffed the Cowboys on their ensuing possession, and Estes returned that punt for a touchdown.
Miles and Estes also collaborated for two passing touchdowns, one of 65 yards and another from 25 yards out.
Estes led the team with 73 yards rushing on eight carries and added one more touchdown that way.
"He played incredible," Bruner said. "It was awesome. He's coming into his own. He had two frustrating years where he was hurt, and now it's fun to watch him have a good year. He deserves it."
Not to be completely outdone, Miles hit Jacob Hange for a 70-yard touchdown and ran for another, finishing up with 70 yards rushing on 10 attempts.
He was 13-20 through the air for 276 yards.
Hange, meanwhile, added a rushing touchdown and finished with 40 yards.
"It was one of those games where everything was clicking," Bruner said.
No kidding. The team converted on all eight of its extra point attempts, including two two-point conversion passes. The one time Soroco was forced into punting, Matt Watwood dropped the ball at the 8-yard line and watched it bounce directly sideways and out of bounds.
Soroco led 36-0 after the first quarter and 58-0 at halftime, and for the fourth time in five games, the junior varsity got ample time on the field.
"The kids played hard, and they have a lot of confidence in what we're doing," Bruner said. "Now we need to get home and start working. Dove Creek's next, and they're undefeated too."
