Pueblo The Steamboat Springs High School football team isn’t the only team left that has a dynamic offensive and a stingy defense.
Valor Christian, who came into the Class 3A semifinals with an offense that could be compared to Steamboat’s, used a little defense Saturday against Mountain View, advancing to Saturday’s state championship with a 21-7 win.
Valor and Steamboat will square off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Legacy Stadium in Aurora.
The Eagles scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters Saturday in downing the Mountain Lions.
Valor went up 7-0 in the first quarter on a George Talanoa 2-yard run. Cameron Gray added a 40-yard punt return early in the third quarter to make it 14-0. Mountain View responded right after with a 10-yard run by Brennan Stine to cut the lead to 14-7, before Gray scored from 21 yards out to make it 21-7.
The Eagles defense held the Mountain Lions to 183 yards of offense, including holding Mountain View quarterback Stine to 3 of 15 passing, for 34 yards and an interception.
Valor quarterback Brock Berglund, who has nearly 2,900 total yards and 39 touchdowns on the season, had a relatively pedestrian day.
The junior was 10 of 17 for 136 yards and no touchdowns. He also carried the ball 11 times for 48 yards.
But where Berglund struggled — if you can call it that — his teammates made up for it.
He was able to find six receivers, and five Eagles got at least six carries.
Valor, which is in its second year of varsity football and will move up to Class 4A next season, is led by Brent Vieselmeyer.
Vieselmeyer was the defensive coordinator for eight seasons at Orange Lutheran in California. In 2006, Vieselmeyer helped lead Orange Lutheran to a No. 1 ranking in California and No. 7 ranking in the United States.
