Looking Back
U.S. 40 highway in Northwest Colorado will receive considerable work, it is understood from the appropriations for road work in 1935. Most of the work will be concentrated between Elk Springs and Maybell and from Masadona to the Utah state line. The projects surveyed in this district will cost $750,000 to complete and it is believed that a large part of the construction will be completed in 1935.
Two other projects on north 40 are receiving considerable attention, one from Kremmling to Parshall and the other from Hot Sulphur Springs to Granby.
Forest Service office works to map county
Marshall Thayer, Dan Gibson and John Isaacson are working in the Steamboat forest office on the making of maps of the forage acre factors and types of grazing for the national forest from the southern Wyoming boundary line of the Routt forest. Airplane pictures were first taken of the area and the men made a ground survey of the surface. With the airplane pictures and the ground survey, the mapmakers will plot out unit grazing maps showing the important vegetation, timber types, lay of the land, fences, improvements, etc.
Businessmen were hosts to large crowd Saturday
Turkeys were in the air, turkeys were everywhere Saturday afternoon when 12 birds were released from the roof of the Chief theater. The crowds had emerged from the theater after enjoying the free show, when Fred Lind and his helpers turned one bird after another loose.
The turkeys flew high for an instant then fluttered down into the crowds. Some of them were caught by the legs while still in the air. Grabs were made by a dozen other hands and feathers flew right and left. Once in a while a turkey would land on the ground and then there would be a wild scramble and the lucky one had a harder time getting his bird.
There was no indication just where the turkey was going to land, but most of them sailed toward the Furlong Hardware store and then downward. One wary bird lit on the window ledge of the second story of Furlongs and rested there until released from inside. It took a swing toward the Pioneer Hotel, but its freedom was short.
