— The dreary weekend likely will not include much snow for Steamboat Springs or the ski area, forecasters said Friday.

Although National Weather Service forecasters predict a 40 percent chance of snow for the area, that probably won’t add up to many inches.

John Kyle, a program manager at the weather service’s Grand Junction office, said Steamboat residents could expect a couple of inches of snow in town and 3 to 6 on the mountain this weekend.

Nearly all of western Colorado and eastern Utah are under a hazardous weather outlook until Tuesday. Farther south, the San Juan Mountains and the towns of Telluride, Lake City and Durango are under a winter storm watch, with as much as 12 inches possible in that region.

Kyle said the forecast for today in Steamboat calls for a high of 41 degrees with a low of 20 tonight. Conditions will improve slightly Sunday, with a chance of snow in the morning and a high near 36.

Steamboat Ski Area opened several more runs Friday, along with the gondola and Burgess Creek lifts. A Friday afternoon report from the ski area listed a 14-inch base, with man-made conditions.

The recent cold, clear nights have helped snowmaking operations, but no new natural snow has been reported for several days.
