If Brent Rowan’s acoustic family Christmas concert comes off the way he’d like it to, the Priest Creek Ballroom at the Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel will feel more like a living room than a concert venue.
“We want everyone to feel like we’re in the den or the living room, passing around the guitar or the piano,” Rowan said about the concert planned for Dec. 19. “It feels like an old-time Christmas with the audience, where it’s not so much a performance as an inclusion with the audience.”
Rowan has spent the past 30 years establishing himself as a lead guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and acoustic presence in Nashville, Tenn. He owns a home in Steamboat Springs and spends the holidays here with his family each year. Rowan’s performance Dec. 19 will be his third acoustic holiday concert in Steamboat.
In the past, Rowan has performed with pianist Regi Stone. On Dec. 19, he’ll appear with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Linda Davis, guitarist and vocalist Lang Scott, and Lady Antebellum vocalist Hillary Scott. Davis and Lang Scott have been married since 1984; Hillary Scott is their daughter.
Hillary Scott and Lady Antebellum took home Vocal Group of the Year and Single of the Year honors at the 2009 Country Music Association awards.
“When we first set this up, it was even before … Lady Antebellum has won all these awards this fall, so it’s even better because more people are intrigued with that band now as when we started,” Rowan said.
Rowan said the mostly holiday-themed concert offers a varied experience for the audience and allows him a chance to introduce his country-music family to his Steamboat family.
The concert will start with a solo performance by Rowan before he brings out his guests. Most of the songs will be holiday favorites, and Rowan said Hillary Scott is likely to perform a Lady Antebellum selection or two.
Describing himself as “a sucker” for old-time holiday carols, Rowan said he appreciates the innocent time and family gatherings the songs remind him of.
“We would have occasionally people over to play or sing, and it was just some really fond memories,” Rowan said. “Sometimes, people weren’t necessarily that good, but the spirit of everybody being included and just sharing whatever talent they had at whatever level they did have it, that’s a big, important memory to me.”
