Steamboat Springs It didn’t take long for tennis professional Greg Sussman to get noticed on the court in Steamboat Springs.
Sussman, who started working at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs this month, topped the men’s 5.0 singles division at the 16th annual Steamboat City Singles and Doubles Championships. The tournament was last weekend at the Tennis Center.
Sussman’s title in the men’s top-rated division came down to a tiebreaker. Sussman, Jamey Swiggart and Louis Nijsten were tied after the round robin with 2-1 records. The difference was that Sussman played three sets in his loss to Nijsten. He won based on percentage points.
“The competition at this tournament was really even,” Sussman said. “Every set and every match came down to just a few key points.”
The men’s title in the 5.0 division was just one of the honors handed out at last weekend’s tournament. Play began Friday night and continued through Sunday in men’s 5.0, men’s 4.5, men’s 4.0 and men’s 3.5 singles divisions. There also were women’s 3.0 and 4.0 singles divisions.
Titles also were up for grabs in men’s 4.0 and 5.0 doubles division and women’s 3.0, 4.0 and 4.5 doubles divisions.
Winners were Wade Wykert in the men’s 3.5 singles, Callum Richman in the men’s 4.0 singles, Mirko Erspamer in the men’s 4.5 singles and Sussman in the men’s 5.0 division.
Sussman teamed up with William Krueger to win the 5.0 men’s doubles division. Luke Farny and Richman topped the men’s 4.0 doubles division.
On the women’s side, it was Christina Allevato earning the title in the women’s 4.0 singles division and Donna Dunkelberger taking home the title in the women’s 3.0 singles division.
Laurie Buelow and Stacy Swiggart teamed up to win the women’s 4.5 doubles title. Rebecca Lamb and Elizabeth Speare won the women’s 4.0 title, and Karen DeLine and Victoria Mertz claimed the 3.0 doubles title.
