Ski patrollers suit up for Scholarship Day

Group has new recruits, new gear for the season that starts today

Ready for the first day of the season, Steamboat Ski Area ski patrollers will be on the slopes keeping people safe and on the designated runs. Ski Patrol Director John Kohnke said three new patrollers will join the staff of nearly 100 for this ski season as they start patrolling on Scholarship Day today.

All the group needs is whipped cream for Thursday's Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Routt County United Way's free Thanksgiving dinner is 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. All food needs are covered, but the agency invites people to bring whipped cream topping.

Nordic skiers to skip World Cup

The top Nordic combined skiers in the world will get back on the snow in Kuusamo, Finland, this week when the World Cup officially returns, but there will be at least one team missing. “We are skipping Kuusamo,” U.S. Nordic combined coach Dave Jarrett said.

Turkey trotters sought for Thanksgiving Day race

Steamboat’s inaugural Thank­­sgiving Day turkey trot race will start at 9 a.m. Thursday at Steamboat Springs High School. The all-asphalt course will lead participants 4.6 miles along paved roads.

Additional lights, an expanded caroling session and about 400 pingpong balls falling from an overhead crane will make a splash at the Light Up the Night community tree lighting Friday. Festivities start at 6 p.m. on the courthouse lawn with free hot chocolate, cider and cookies.
