— A 47-year-old Denver man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer Friday evening in Hayden.

Hayden Police Department officers arrested Miguel Marcus Manzanares on suspicion of second-degree assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstruction of a police officer.

Officer Russ Davis responded to a reported disturbance on Vista Verde Drive in Hayden at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, Hayden Police Chief Ray Birch said Saturday afternoon. An elderly woman requested an officer because of a dispute with her son, Manzanares, Birch said.

Manzanares allegedly became violent when Davis arrived. The man’s mother reported that he had been drinking alcohol, Birch said.

“He basically assaulted the officer, who did discharge his Taser, implement his Taser, subduing the individual,” Birch said.

During Davis’ effort to arrest Manzanares, handcuff him and get him into a police car, Manzanares and Davis fell to the ground, Birch said. Manzanares also spit in the officer’s face, Birch said.

Davis injured his knee and went to a hospital for treatment. Birch said that he did not know the extent of the injury and that Davis is off duty while injured. Birch was out of the office Saturday and did not have an incident report with him to give further details about the alleged assault or arrest process.

Birch said a background check on Manzanares through an automated law enforcement data system for Colorado showed that the man had “an extensive criminal background dating back to 1982,” with several arrests.

“There was also an indicator on this statewide system that he was a danger to police officers by the nature of his previous arrests,” Birch said.

Manzanares was being held at the Routt County Jail as of Saturday afternoon.
