Lincoln Avenue work stops for winter

Contractors finish in the nick of time, dodging snowstorm

— Construction on Lincoln Avenue/U.S. Highway 40 wrapped up for the season Thursday, one day before winter arrived in Steamboat Springs.

“The timing could not have been better,” John Murnan said. He is the project manager for Scott Contracting, of Henderson, which is handling the work.

Murnan said minor punch list work was completed Thursday, and a walk-through was conducted with city and Colorado Department of Transportation officials.

“You could say we’re de-mob-ing now,” Murnan said, tossing out slang for demobilizing.

This fall’s underground utility work was a prelude to next spring, when the asphalt pavement on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat will be replaced by concrete. As the construction work moved from west to east during autumn, orange cones and flag personnel guided traffic around excavated holes in the road.

“We could have stayed longer, but we saw the forecast. We got our utilities underground before the winter weather came,” Murnan said.

When the snow melts in the spring and Scott’s crews return to the job, they’ll begin by finishing up some leftover work on storm sewer inlets and some delicate work involving underground electrical lines for stoplights and existing fiber optic cable. Then they’ll dive into the repaving work.

The asphalt will be taken up in chunks by excavating equipment — it won’t be roto-milled, Murnan said.

“Then we’ll put down base, and we’ll have our monster concrete paver up there,” he said.

Scott Contracting Site Superintendent Cody Patterson told the Steamboat Today this month that the bulk of next spring’s concrete paving will take place at night.
