Steamboat Springs Between 4 and 8 inches of snow could fall in Steamboat Springs over the next two days, with a foot or more falling at higher elevations.
Two winter storms are expected to roll through the region beginning tonight, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter weather advisory for Steamboat Springs and surrounding areas. The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. today through 6 a.m. Saturday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Megan Schwitzer said the first storm system could bring 4 to 8 inches of snow to Steamboat by Saturday morning. The winter weather could continue after that initial storm moves through the area, Schwitzer said.
“We’ve got a stronger and colder storm moving in behind it,” she said.
That second dose could last into Sunday, she added.
The Steamboat Ski Area is scheduled to open Nov. 25 with Scholarship Day, when proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Scholarship Fund. Schwitzer said her office only forecasts about seven days ahead, and she declined to speculate about what kind of weather the Steamboat area could receive before Nov. 25. She did say that looking into next week, cooler temperatures prevail, indicating the area’s recent balmy weather is not likely to return.
There is an 80 percent chance of snow Friday and Friday night. Friday’s daytime high is forecast at 38 degrees, with an overnight low of 18. The chance of snow is 60 percent Saturday and Saturday night.
A National Weather Service news release warned travelers of hazardous road conditions today through Sunday, especially at higher elevations.
