Charlene Stees: Issue affects us all

I would like for someone to explain why the election for the annexation of the Steamboat 700 should not be a countywide election. If approved, the subdivision will impact everyone in Routt County from the Eagle County line to the Moffat County line. The people who purchase property out there will be using all the county roads to go to Steamboat Lake and to Stagecoach and Elkhead reservoirs. They will impact our hospital and our schools. Even though they say they will build new schools, there will still be an impact on all our amenities. If they do everything they say they will do, there is no way the residences out there will be affordable to the average worker in Routt County. There is no such thing as affordable housing now, and I doubt if there ever will be. That’s the reason there are so many workers driving from Craig each day.
I definitely think this issue should be brought to a vote, and not just a vote of the voters of Steamboat Springs. It should be voted on by all voters in Routt County.

Hi Charlene -
I think the sentiment you expressed in your letter is shared by many others. On the surface, it does not seem very fair. The annexation of the land associated with SB700 will affect folks differently depending upon where they live. If you live outside the existing city limits of Steamboat Springs this means you do not get to vote. Wishing it were different is going to change the reality. It is what it is!
The petitions that are being circulated are to place a referendum on the ballot to overturn the annexation ordnance passed by Steamboat Springs City Council. Just as folks that live outside of the city limits of Steamboat Springs, do not get to vote for Steamboat Springs City Council member to represent them nor do they get to vote if (big IF) the this citizen sponsored referendum makes it to the ballot.
If, (again big IF), this citizen petition drive is successful, nothing prevents you from contributing financially to the ensuing campaign to overturn the ordnance. Often dollars have far more influence than a single vote ever could. Dollars influence outcome - it is the American way both at the national and local level.
