Best of the Web: Base area revamp

“That site may be the perfect venue for the Olympian send off this winter, especially if an ice rink is set up.
Imagine some ice skating torch parades along with an on-snow torch parade.
A nightly activity like ice skating would create the need for small vendors such as hot cocoa and coffee, etc.
In other words, create the need for business with something that attracts traffic. No one is going to visit an empty meadow to buy a T-shirt.”

All-mail election
I understand and respect trying to save money during a time of economic difficulty, but I question whether an election is the best place to do that. Voting is a right, and I feel that being presented with a number of options on how to participate is the best way for the county to ensure they are giving their voters that right.
I have to imagine that voter turnout would have been higher had there been a number of places to physically or electronically cast a ballot on Election Day. The all mail-in ballot system limits opportunity.
I understand that there were fewer contested races this year than in past odd-year elections, and that the only issue presented on the ballot wasn’t a very hot issue, and that those factors contributed to the lower voter turnout, as well.
I just hope that the county weighs the negative effects of the mail-in-only election against the financial benefit in years to come, and makes the right decision.
