Steamboat's elk season strong for some, empty for others

Steamboat artists donate pieces to benefit Arts Council fundraiser

A call for art by the Visual Arts Committee brought in about 50 donations from about 50 artists. That work opens for early viewing and bidding from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Depot Art Center. The selection includes paintings, photos, glasswork, fabric art and pottery.

YVMC surveys senior housing need

YVMC has targeted local baby boomers and senior residents with a survey about the demands for senior living for their parents. A first batch of postcards went out in the mail, and anyone interested can return the postcard to receive the survey.

Steamboat briefs: College workshop to be held in Oak Creek today

College in Colorado will provide free college preparatory workshops from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Soroco High School. The workshops will include information about planning for college, including test prep, how to apply to and how to pay for college, said Bridget Black, a spokeswoman for College in Colorado.

Steamboat 700 petitioners submit 600 signatures

Let's Vote committee required to collect 829 signatures by Nov. 12 to force referendum of annexation

The committee that hopes to bring the city of Steamboat Springs' annexation of Steamboat 700 to referendum submitted its first collection of signatures Tuesday. City Clerk Julie Franklin confirmed Wednesday that the committee, known as Let's Vote, has submitted 14 petitions, which the group says contain more than 600 signatures.

Swiggart a High School Heisman finalist

Kylee Swiggart has been named one of 20 state finalists for the 2009 Wendy's High School Heisman Award. More than 50,000 seniors applied nationwide, and 10,848 were selected as finalists.

Hermacinski eyes council presidency

Economic development, growth issues on council's priority list

Cari Hermacinski is making no secret of her aspirations to be the next president of the Steamboat Springs City Council. Hermacinski won re-election Tuesday against former City Council President Kevin Bennett. Kenny Reisman and Jim Engelken, who also is a former councilman, won their races and will be the only new members to join the body when it meets Tuesday for the first time since the election and begins to chart a course for the next two years.

Athlete of the Week: Mitch Lekarczyk

Why Lekarczyk: The Steamboat linebacker had five tackles in a 58-13 win against Buena Vista on Friday. In the season, Lekarczyk is leading the Sailors with 10 tackles a game. That number also puts him seventh in Class 3A.

A Steamboat Springs man arrested in a December raid was sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of a machine gun and possession of and intent to distribute cocaine.

BOCES won't handle No Child Left Behind funds

Money will go directly to school districts

The Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services will not be given federal No Child Left Behind Act funding for title programs to disburse to its six member school districts. A letter Wednesday from Robert Hammond, the deputy commissioner of the Colorado Department of Education, stated that the funds would be distributed directly to the districts instead of through BOCES.

More mail-only elections likely for primaries, odd years

Routt County's first election conducted exclusively with mail ballots isn't likely to be its last. That means an all-mail-ballot format may continue to be used in August primary and November odd-year elections in Routt County.
