School district curriculum director position eliminated

JoAnne Hilton-Gabeler's position as director of curriculum and instruction for the Steamboat Springs School District was eliminated in the proposed 2009-10 budget.
Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said the position was eliminated strictly for financial purposes.
Hilton-Gabeler will become the superintendent of the Aguilar RE-6 School District in southern Colorado in July, she said in an e-mail. She joined the Steamboat Springs School District two years ago.
Cunningham said she, school principals and Instructional Support Services will perform curriculum duties.
Cutting the position will save the district more than $111,000 next year. Cunningham said there were no immediate plans to replace Hilton-Gabeler but that the position may come back in the future depending on budgets.

It is a huge loss to the district. JoAnne is intelligent and cares so much about all of the children. It is a shame that she was not able to stay here and continue to improve our district. Aguilar district is very lucky to get her.

Thank you to the staff at the Pilot for removing the offensive comment from Cards. Personal attacks in a small town paper or blog have no place in a public forum from anonymous sources, period! I encourage other readers to request removal of personal attacks on local individuals.
