Name: David Jolly
Age: 38
Occupation: Supervisor for UPS; office manager, Steamboat Springs Arts Council
Place of birth: Warner Robbins, Ga.
Q. When did you move to Routt County, and what brought you here?
A. My wife and I both came to Steamboat in 2001 after working for about nine years at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. We both wanted a change of pace, and Heidi had the opportunity of a lifetime to run her very own dance studio in this charming little mountain town. She's done very well and is still running Northwest Ballet Studio quite successfully.
Q. What's the biggest risk you've taken recently?
A. Applying for jobs that I have no previous experience in whatsoever. The market is getting that tough and competitive folks! Watch out!
Q. Describe your morning routine.
A. Shower, shave, pick an outfit that complements my mood and activity for the day, down a glass of juice, pack a lunch, and spend quality time with my wife and son before having to head out the door for work.
Q. Has a book ever changed your life? What was it and why?
A. To be perfectly honest, I'm not much of a reader. It takes me forever to finish a novel. I receive books that I'm interested in for Christmas and birthdays, and I'm usually not even close to being finished before someone has bought me another. I'm literally three
books behind in my collection thus far. (Sigh.) Once I've won the lottery, I will finally be able to afford the world's most sought-after commodity: TIME!
Q. What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
A. Be nice to yourself. It may be as simple as treating yourself to a coffee one day, or taking a whole day off for a road trip with friends. But every now and then you need some "you time."
Q. What three things would you want people to know about you?
A. 1. Yes ladies, I am married (and very happily, too). 2. I would love nothing more than to entertain the good citizens of Steamboat with endless plays, musicals, dance shows and puppeteering, but until a real stage is erected and fully funded, it will have to remain a dream. 3. And no, I don't do children's parties.
Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A. Oddly enough, I always thought I was going to be a chef. I never took any culinary classes, but I would thrive at creating my own scrumptious concoctions and original dishes in the kitchen. But once I hit the stage in high school and college, acting and performing took over. It's been my passion ever since.
Q. If you could invite any four people to dinner, who would they be, and what would you talk about?
A. Steven Spielberg; I'd simply ask if there were any upcoming projects he has that I would be suited for - and maybe bounce a few script ideas I have brewing in my head off of him. Jim Henson; pretty much the same conversation as with Mr. Spielberg, but revolving around the Muppets. Bob Iger; I have some great money-making plans for the Disney Theme Parks on both coasts in exchange for my own personal chateau built right on the premises. And my wife, Heidi. Just because I don't get to spend as much time with her as I'd like to.
Q. Do you collect anything?
A. I'm a soundtrack/score addict. I don't really have an explanation for it. Maybe it's a way of reliving brilliant moments in film, or maybe because there isn't any original classical music being produced anymore, I don't know. I have a ton of CDs in my possession, and now with the help of "iTunes" I have quadrupled my collection. I know. I'm a geek.
Q. In the Meatloaf song, "I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that," what is that?
A. Kiss Michael David onstage in front of a "Cabaret" crowd. I just won't do that.
Q. What was your first job?
A. Nighttime disc jockey for WFSH "Fish Radio" in Niceville, Fla. Spinning the golden oldies from low tide to high tide! Don't touch that dial, it's got Fish on it!
Q. Who is your favorite superhero? Why?
A. Rogue from the X-Men. Something about being able to absorb other superheroes' powers and use them at will intrigues me. A character who has that much versatility within the comic book realm truly holds my interest. That, and she's a hottie.
Q. Do you have a tattoo? If so, what of, and why did you choose it?
A. I don't have one, but I have thought about it a lot. If I did finally decide to get one done, I'd think it would have to be an original crest that encompasses all of my favorite pop culture icons. The only problem I face is where on my body I would feel comfortable showcasing it.
Q. Do you have any phobias?
A. Helplessness. I hate the thought and the feeling of not being able to move because I'm too afraid.
Q. If you could go back in time, to what event or time period would you go?
A. I think I'd enjoy life in the 1940s. The music is fantabulous, and Hollywood was in its prime. There was just enough technology that I would never be bored, and everyday life would be simplistic without being cumbersome. I would probably have done well there.
Q. What is your favorite thing to do in Routt County?
A. It's no secret that I'm not as huge of a recreation enthusiast as most Steamboatians, but I do love the natural ambience of the outdoors in the mountains. Tell me what could be better than a lovely alfresco dinner followed by a crisply chilled glass of vino and sitting in front of an aromatic campfire while snuggling under a blanket with the one you love? (Beer, wings and a good hockey game at The Tap House runs a close second place.)
