Marathon, triathlon events have yet to fill up

Steamboat Springs There still is plenty of opportunity for those hoping to throw their name in for the Steamboat Marathon.
Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association special events director Kara Givnish said registration for the June 7 race is in tune with last year's numbers. About 400 racers already have forked over the $75 entry fee. The event is capped at 500, though organizers are not expecting it to reach capacity.
"We see it as a trend," Givnish said. "We are right on par with last year's numbers, but the years prior had more full marathon runners. No one is running as far these days. Still, we're really happy with where we're at."
The half-marathon, meanwhile, has been booked solid for weeks. That 13-mile trek topped out at 1,200 runners.
"It's a challenge, but one that's still attainable for many people that maybe aren't super athletic," Givnish said about the interest in the race.
The 10-kilometer race only has 200 competitors signed up. That's not unusual, either. There is no cap on the number of people that can sign up for the $30 race, and many wait until the last minute before committing.
The courses remain the same - with marathon and half-marathon runners streaming down toward Steamboat Springs from the north and the 10K racers winding through town.
Still, regular racers will encounter a few changes.
Packet pick-up for the race has been moved from its usual spot at Christy Sports to Olympian Hall at the base of Howelsen Hill. Packets will be available from noon to 5 p.m. June 5 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6.
All the races start at 7:30 a.m. June 7. To register or for more information, check out www.steamboatmarthon.com.
Spots remain for triathlon
There's no banner over the front door advertising as much, but the Steamboat Triathlon's under new management.
That hasn't done much to affect the interest in the late-summer Steamboat staple.
Race organizer Joy Rasmussen said with three months remaining before the Aug. 30 race, registration is on track.
The race currently is about 1/3 of the way to its 650-racer capacity.
"We are really pleased with the results so far," Rasmussen said. "We have a different management group this year, and so we're hoping the race takes on a different flavor. So far, that's been pretty cool."
Management of the fifth annual event falls this year to locals, after Barry Siff's 5430 Sports company from Boulder opted not to continue with the Steamboat event.
Rasmussen said that change will help bring a much more Steamboat-centric atmosphere to the event.
She said the economy hasn't slowed local sponsors, though organizers still are looking for a few more.
Registering for the race costs $80 until June 15, when it bumps up to $90. To register, check out www.steamboattriathlon.com.
