A committee tasked with finding a name for a new elementary school in Moffat County has whittled down a batch of suggested names to five finalists, the committee reported Friday afternoon.

The Moffat County School District is building a new middle school and restructuring its elementary schools.

As part of the process, Craig Intermediate School will shift from housing fifth- and sixth-grade students to preschool through fifth-graders, thus becoming an elementary and needing a new name.

The final five name suggestions, along with a brief description of the name suggestion as reported by the naming committee, are as listed:

• Bears Ears Elementary - Bears Ears Mountain is close to Craig and can be seen from the school.

• Creekside Elementary - Fortification Creek runs by the side of the school.

• Rosedale Elementary - Rosedale is the subdivision of Craig that the school is located in.

• Sandrock Elementary - The school is near the sand rocks, which are visible from the school.

• William E. Adams Elementary - Maj. Adams was a U.S. Army Helicopter pilot from Craig who was killed May 25, 1971, while trying to evacuate wounded soldiers during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Kindergarten through sixth-grade students district-wide will vote on the school name of their choice Thursday.

The name with the most votes will be forwarded to the Moffat County School Board for a final sign off.

That decision could come during the board's May 28 meeting.
