High water forces Yampa River Core Trail closures

— Several seasonal closures of the Yampa River Core Trail are in effect because of the high-running waters of the Yampa River.

The closed sections of the Core Trail are the 13th Street underpass, the railroad underpass upstream of Fetcher Pond and the U.S. Highway 40 underpass at Walton Creek. Additional closures are likely as stream flows continue to fluctuate.

County reminds drivers about registration late fee

Effective June 1, new legislation will require Colorado motor vehicle owners to pay a late fee on delinquent registrations. The late fee will be assessed at $25 per month, up to $100, and will apply to renewals past the 30-day grace period, expired temporary permits, new vehicles not registered within 60 days of purchase and vehicles not registered within 90 days of residency in Colorado. State law requires vehicle registrations to be current whether or not the vehicle is used. Call the county's motor vehicle department at 870-5412 for more information.

No Steamboat Brewers' Festival planned this year

The Steamboat Brewers' Festival will not happen this fall, and the event's future is uncertain, said festival founder and organizer Jody Anagnos.

Anagnos decided to take the year off from the festival at the beginning of 2009 because of a shaky economy, she said. The Brewers' Festival can cost upward of $25,000 to produce each year, Anagnos said. That amount can be tricky for Anagnos' production company - a "one-man show" called Blue Dog Events - to come up with from year to year, she said.

The Brewers' Festival Web site states the event will come back Sept. 18, 2010, but Anagnos said Thursday she did not know whether the event would continue. Support and collaboration from local businesses could help the festival find new life, she said.

Anagnos founded the Steamboat Brewers' Festival in 2007 with the vision of creating a family-friendly beer tasting geared toward locals. The event brought breweries from across the country back to town after the Steamboat Mountain Brewfest was discontinued in 2005.
