Monday Medical: How well do you know YVMC?

National Hospital Week

May 10 to 16 is National Hospital Week. To learn more about your community hospital, visit or stop by Yampa Valley Medical Center's lobby and pick up a copy of the 2009 Report to the Community.

— Did you know Yampa Valley Medical Center offers free monthly programs about important health topics? Did you know that YVMC provided $2.3 million in financial assistance to patients in 2008? Did you know that more than 105,000 tests were performed by the YVMC's laboratory last year?

For most people, hospitals are "out of sight, out of mind" and places to avoid. For some, even the mention of the word sends shivers down the spine. However, with a national trend to take better care of ourselves, hospitals have become much more than just the place to go when you get sick or injured.

With every year that passes by, YVMC becomes a more far-reaching medical facility. It is no surprise that most people's knowledge about YVMC only scratches the surface. This article aims to encourage readers to take a closer look.

One way to learn about the latest programs and services available at YVMC is to pick up our annual publication, the 2009 Report to the Community. The report features stories about our unique programs, state-of-the-art equipment and patients' personal stories about how YVMC made a difference in their lives.

Produced by YVMC's public relations department and the staff at the Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley, this report is the one-stop resource that highlights YVMC's accomplishments from the past year and looks ahead to the future of healthcare in our region.

From our $13 million hospital expansion project to holistic programs offered to our cancer patients, the report is a mere sample of what can be found on our campus on a daily basis.

The report also recognizes our hospital staff, the community's physicians and our fleet of volunteers, all of whom play a vital role in the hospital's ability to serve our community. We share our financials for fiscal year 2008 and statistics from the past three years.

Additionally, we feature letters from patients that express their gratitude and appreciation, a tradition we began with last year's report.

Within the Healthcare Foundation's section, we acknowledge all of our donors who provide essential financial support. Through their generosity, YVMC is able to purchase the latest equipment to meet the needs of our community.

You can pick up a copy of the report at YVMC, the Healthcare Foundation or the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. It also is available on our Web site, You can download and view or print your own copy.

Speaking of our Web site, this is another excellent source of up-to-date information about our services, programs and events at YVMC. Our Web site was re-designed in late 2007 to be more user-friendly.

If you think you need to leave the valley to have a procedure or see a specialist, please start your search by seeing what is available here. You might just find you can "shop locally" and save yourself the trip.

Yampa Valley Medical Center is committed to serving the needs of its growing communities. As our community grows, so must our services. In fact, we are often told by our neighbors and friends that they are surprised to learn about the extent of healthcare available at YVMC.

If you are one of those locals who takes pride in possessing a deep knowledge of the Yampa Valley's vast amenities, we encourage you to learn a little more about what your community hospital has to offer. Help us spread the word that YVMC is one of the region's finest assets.
