Steamboat Springs Ask Chix with Stix coach Tim Shorland to name his favorite team to play against, and he will not hesitate.
Vail.
So it is fitting that his women's hockey team topped off its best regular season in team history with a decisive 5-2 upset against the A2 division Vail Breakaways on March 20.
"That was the most solid game we have played all season," Shorland said. "We are finally where we want to be."
This weekend, the Chix are headed to Fort Collins to play in the Women's Association of Colorado Hockey B1 State Tournament. The Chix (12-7-1 overall; 10-3 in division) are ranked first and will face four other teams in a round robin style tournament.
Other teams participating in this year's tournament, in order of ranking, are the Angry Beavers, Fort Collins Flames, DWHL Renegades and Northern Colorado Comets. The top four teams will move on to the championship and consolation games.
"The difference between this year and previous years is everyone is feeling comfortable and relaxed," Shorland said. "We are ready to go and play some hockey."
The Chix are undefeated against the Flames, Renegades and Comets this season. They split their two games against the Beavers. The Chix begin tournament play at 8:30 p.m. tonight against the Angry Beavers, with a full roster of 18 players.
Tournament play continues Saturday and Sunday.
Shorland said there is more than just the win-loss record to measuring his team's achievements this season.
"We've received awesome support from the community and even beyond," he said. "Everyone is behind us and giving their support."
