Yearling had been attacked by dogs

— With the help of a local veterinarian and the Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation, a yearling bull elk was recently released back into the wild after suffering injuries during a dog attack.

The elk calf was discovered near the parking lot of the Steamboat Ski Touring Center earlier this month. It had suffered injuries to its hind quarters as a result of the attack. Dr. Lee Meyring and Tracy Bye, director of Steamboat-based Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation, took in the calf. After some stitches, muscle reattachment and recovery time, Meyring and Bye released the calf back into the wild in mid-March.

Touring Center skiers had reported that the calf's mom was wandering the area looking for her son.
