Holli Salazar and Sarajane Rossi remained close friends throughout high school even though they sat on opposite ends of the heated Hayden-Soroco rivalry.
The longtime friends are finally teammates.
Both were selected to the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports all-star basketball team and will play in a special game Sunday at Arvada West High School in Arvada.
All the selected 2A players will be split into two teams that will face off at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Teams also were created from the state's top 1A, 3A, 4A and 5A girls.
The weekend of events starts Saturday with a team picture and a practice. A banquet to honor the selected players is set for Saturday night in Westminster.
In addition to the CCGS selection, Salazar was selected to the all-tournament team for last week's state tournament, in which her Hayden Tigers placed third.
The Hayden senior averaged 10.33 points per game in the tournament and was the team's leading scorer in each of the three games.
Salazar was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Christa Loyd and junior Brianna Bard, of two-time defending state champion Wray, and juniors Jordyn Reinks and Johanna Reed, of state runner-up Paonia.
Wray senior Stacy Post was selected as the tournament's most valuable player.
Rossi led the Rams all season. The senior averaged 16 points a game, nine rebounds and four assists.
"She's a great leader and has great work ethic," Soroco coach David Bruner said. "She's put a lot time and work in, and a lot of these younger kids look up to her."
Soroco also will have two players playing in the May 30, 8-man football All-State game.
Mike Davis and Bobby Mason will play in the 10:30 a.m. game at Sterling High School.
"They put a lot of work in," Bruner said. "It's a neat experience for the kids. They get to meet kids they played against."
Hayden Middle School wrestlers undefeated
The Hayden Middle School wrestling team remains undefeated as it approaches its final tournaments this season.
The team has won tournaments in Craig, Oak Creek and Hayden and claims four undefeated wrestlers. Led by a strong eighth-grade class, the squad placed wrestlers in nine of the 15 championship matches at a tournament at Soroco last weekend and emerged with seven weight-division titles.
The team is traveling to the Rocky Mountain Nationals this weekend, then will wrestle at the Colorado Middle School Regionals in Grand Junction the weekend of March 28 and 29 for a chance to qualify for the April 4 and 5 Middle School State Wrestling Tournament.
