— Oak Creek resident Tom Thurston left the Iditarod checkpoint Saturday, clearing the halfway point in the grueling dogsled race that bears the same name.

GPS tracking from Alaska showed that as of Saturday evening Mountain Daylight Time, Thurston was progressing toward Shageluk, a town with a population of 139. The town's name is an Ingalik Indian word meaning "village of the dog people."

Thurston was in 51st place out of 64 competitors as of Saturday.

The 37th annual Iditarod dogsled race began March 7 and spans 1,150 miles from Anchorage in southern Alaska to Nome, a northern Alaskan town looking out on the Bering Sea.
