Science Olympiad team heads to state competition

The Steamboat Springs High School Science Olympiad team scored eighth place at the northern regional competition in Fort Collins on March 7, earning them a berth to the state competition April 11 at the Colorado School of Mines.

Students created elevated bridges, built an electric vehicle and took written tests for their awards.

Hayden school seeks old

snowboards, skis in April

Hayden Middle School students in Partners in Routt County's after-school program are seeking old snowboards and skis during April to help create a bench for the school. The group also is seeking supplies of colorful outdoor paint and 2-by-6 boards about 6 feet long.

NASA scientist to speak at Colorado Mountain College

Dr. Ellen Stofan, a NASA scientist and expert on Venus, will speak at Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bristol Hall. Stofan will give a 45-minute audio/visual presentation with information from her National Geographic book, "Planetology: Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System," co-written with NASA astronaut Tom Jones. There also will be 15 minutes for questions after the presentation.

The lecture is the second presented this winter by the Yampa Valley Astronomy Club, the CMC Sky Club and CMC professor of physical science Jimmy Westlake. For more information, call Westlake at 870-4537.
