Best of the Web: Supply and demand

Supply and demand

— I cannot understand why anyone would think that new developments should not be accompanied with water. If they are adding to the demand, then they should add to the supply so that the supply does not run out.

Services needed

The current economic climate should be a reminder to all of us that vital services, specifically police and fire protection, should not be subject to abysmal sales tax receipts. Most municipal and county governments pay for these services through partial property taxes. When the lights are entirely out on the mountain, we still will need firefighters and officers in this town.

Tough cuts

This is a good start, but the city of Steamboat needs three incremental contingency plans to ensure that they are ready for more bad times. This is going to get ugly - particularly for a city dependant upon highly discretionary tourism spending - long, long, long before it gets better. :

I do not envy the City Council or city manager, but they have started down the right path - don't lose your resolve, don't ignore the obvious, and don't fail to plan and act. Thanks for doing the right thing for the city, and my sympathy goes to those who are unfavorably impacted.

Science team a success

Congratulations to the Steamboat Springs Science Olympiad team. Once again, they made it to states.
