Steamboat U-14 girls head to state
Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs girls U-14 hockey coach Herald Stout is not shy about his expectations for his team at the state championships this weekend in Colorado Springs.
Stout's team hasn't lost a game all season and enters the tournament as a confident No. 1 seed.
"Our goal is to come home with state," he said. "We're going to win it. That's our goal."
It's hard to argue with Stout.
Despite a couple of ties on the team's record, Steamboat has been about as consistent as it gets this season.
While success during the regular season prepped Steamboat for the playoffs, Stout said the team still needs contributions all around - from its goalie, defense and forwards - to win.
He said the keys will be to stay disciplined in the offensive and defensive zones, as well as getting to loose pucks first.
"If we win the race to the puck, everything in the team starts to work," he said. "We control the puck."
Steamboat opens the double-elimination tournament Friday against Crested Butte. If Steamboat wins two games, it will be in the championship game Sunday.
