Howelsen Hill begins Monday closures today
Howelsen Hill Ski Area will be closed Mondays for the remainder of the season, beginning today. The city-owned ski area closes for the season March 29. Ski Area Supervisor Jeff Nelson said the decision to close Mondays was a result of the city's most recent efforts to trim its 2009 budget. Nelson said Monday is the day of the week that will affect the public and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club the least. He noted that the ski area used to be closed Mondays in the 1980s.
"We're kind of moving backwards a little bit in an effort to save money," Nelson said.
Nelson said the city will continue to operate the ski area's chairlift on the weekends. The chairlift did not run at the beginning of the season due to budget cuts.
"As long as we still have adequate snow at the top, we're going to continue to run it on the weekends," Nelson said.
