— Steamboat Springs High School sophomore tennis player Hayley Richman was much too nervous to form any sort of game plan.

In fact, Richman admitted, she started shaking when playing the first singles match of her high school career.

Add in that the match was at No. 1 singles, where Steamboat was without the injured Shelby Reed, and Richman said her nerves were at an all-time high.

"We were stretching and (coach) John (Aragon) told me he was going to put me in at No. 1 singles," Richman said. "I started shaking then, and I think I just stopped. Really, I shook the entire time. I was so nervous."

It wasn't evident, however, as Richman cruised passed Evergreen's Maddie Broeren, 6-3, 6-2, in helping the Sailors with a 7-0 victory Saturday at The Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.

Richman's day highlighted an equally impressive match for Steamboat.

The Sailors didn't lose a set all day, despite having a mixed up lineup.

With Reed out, Aragon was forced to switch several teams around.

Still, the win just proved Aragon's assumption that this year's Steamboat team is as deep as ever.

"In years past, it would have been a tough thing to do," Aragon said. "Hayley stepped up and did a nice job. It's probably one of the better matches I've ever seen her play. We're still a little unsettled, but we have a pretty good view of what the players need to do."

In addition to Richman, Valerie Lezin and Claire Parsons also picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

The doubles teams of Kylee Swiggart and Sara Bearss, Mandy Thielemann and Kaitie Breisch, Alli Lowrie and Christi Valicenti and Lauren Siegel and Ali Diehl all cruised in straight sets.

The road gets tougher for Steamboat this week. The team welcomes Aspen on Friday before playing Class 5A Boulder on Saturday.

Still, Aragon said he was pleased with the performance, especially considering all the juggling he had to do.

"We have to keep these kids believing in themselves," he said. "But the excitement I see them coming to the court with is a real plus."
