— The Steamboat Springs High School baseball teams dropped a pair of games Saturday at Denver East, falling 7-3 and 16-0.

"We did not play up to our capabilities," Steamboat manager Dave Roy said.

Initially, the Sailors looked like they'd walk away with the first game.

Steamboat jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run double by Alex Wood and an RBI double by Cody Harris.

But in the second inning, Wood started to struggle a little on the mound and his defense did little to help him.

By the time the inning ended, Steamboat found itself down, 5-3.

"We came out swinging the bats in the first game and scored three in the top half. Then, they went quiet," Roy said. "Then, we gave them five runs just with poor defense. That was all she wrote in the first game."

Wood, Tommy Lyon and Ryan Tibbetts each threw two innings in the first game.

"Tommy was a little wild initially, but then he settled down and struck out the side in his last inning," Roy said about the freshman making his high school baseball debut.

In the second game, Roy said, Steamboat could get nothing going, and Denver East threw a pitcher who completely shut the Sailors down.

The team resumes play Thursday when the Sailors travel to the Hotchkiss Tournament, which runs through Saturday.
