Howelsen Hill to be closed Mondays for rest of season

Howelsen Hill Ski Area will be closed Mondays beginning Monday for the remainder of the season. The city-owned ski area closes for the season March 29. Ski Area Supervisor Jeff Nelson said the decision to close Mondays was a result of the city's most recent efforts to trim its 2009 budget. Nelson said Monday is the day of the week that will affect the public and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club the least. He noted that the ski area used to be closed on Mondays in the 1980s.

"We're kind of moving backward a little bit in an effort to save money," Nelson said.

Nelson said the city will continue to operate the ski area's chairlift on the weekends. The chairlift did not run at the beginning of the season because of budget cuts.

"As long as we still have adequate snow at the top, we're going to continue to run it on the weekends," Nelson said.

Steamboat cracks down on

overdue parking citations

The Steamboat Springs City Council passed an ordinance this week that will allow the city to refer unpaid parking citations to a collection agency. Those who have parking tickets issued from as early as Jan. 1, 2006, will be sent another final notice and will be given 30 days to pay before a collection agency is engaged.

"The main purpose of it is to have compliance with our parking laws," Municipal Court Clerk Judy Plumb said. "Before this was passed, we didn't have a mechanism to collect anything less than three parking tickets."

Plumb said the city has $65,000 in unpaid parking tickets.

"What we'll actually be able to recoup, I don't know," Plumb said. "We're hoping at least 50 percent."

For more information, call Plumb at 871-8255.
