Competition awaits at Teva Mountain Games

Steamboat residents plan to ride in massive Vail event

What: Teva Mountain Games

Where: Vail

When: 10 a.m. today, with events in eight different sports running through Sunday afternoon

— It's not just that other competitors might have frowned upon her or that the step up was expected because she's picked up a sponsorship from Moots.

Steamboat Springs-based mountain biker Kelly Boniface said she's been eager this season to make the jump from the women's expert division to the pro division in the area mountain biking circuit she travels to attend.

"Last summer when I was racing in the expert class, I was killing it," Boniface said. "This year, I didn't want to sandbag. It will be nice to have a race where I can just throw it all out there and see where I end up."

So in the Mountain States Cup and at this weekend's Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Boniface has and will be saddling up with some of the top women of the sport.

At Teva, the decision to bump up a class could even cost a paycheck. Last year, the local biker won the massive Vail event's cross country mountain bike race, an accomplishment that netted her a fat $750 in winnings - a rare payday as money often is not available for the expert class winner.

The pro division winner, meanwhile, can pocket about four times as much, and that's the prize Boniface will be chancing in Saturday's race.

"Now, I'm racing with the big dogs," she said. "It is way more exposure. It's going to be a huge field of really phenomenal riders.

"I'm going to try, go in and give it my best effort. Truly, if I can get into the top 10, I will be psyched."

Boniface will be one of a few Steamboat Springs sportsmen and women making the trip south for the annual Vail summer sports extravaganza.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. today with the steep creek kayaking championship and wraps up Sunday with the speed retrieve dog competition.

That retrieval event will be one of three competitions for dogs. The weekend will feature everything from fly-fishing contests to a paragliding demonstration, a half marathon to a mud run. There are four kayaking competitions and four more mountain bike races.

"It's just a great atmosphere," Barkley Robinson said. "There's always something going on. It's a great scene for spectators."

For the third consecutive year, Robinson won't spend his time in Vail spectating, however. Like Boniface, Robinson plans to tackle the top division of the cross country race.

"We have a pretty good local crowd going down," he said. "Course-wise, it's pretty similar to some of what we can do around here. Some of the downhill is a little more technical than our trails on Emerald Mountain. There will be a lot more short up and down rather than one big climb and one big descent."

Steamboat's Rick Franken said he hopes to take part in the weekend's kayaking creek race. Participating in the event is second priority for the Steamboat entrepreneur, however.

Franken sells kayaking gear through his company, Bomber Gear.

"We will have a booth down there, and I will be showing my line and selling my product," he said. "If I can maneuver it so I can get away, I'd love to compete."
