Sports briefs: Team splits doubleheaders

Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs American Legion baseball team had a legitimate chance to win four games during the weekend and qualify for postseason play.
Unfortunately, after sweeping a doubleheader with Grand Junction Central on Saturday, Steamboat let early leads get away Sunday, dropping a pair of games against eventual Western Slope League champion Palisade.
"We were in control of both games and just couldn't finish," Steamboat manager Dave Roy said about the Palisade games. "I think the boys were tired. With two games on Saturday, I think they ran out of gas."
In the first game against Palisade, Steamboat was in control until the team gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to an 11-4 loss.
In the second game, Tommy Lyon's two-run home run gave Steamboat a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
After picking up two outs in the top of the seventh, Steamboat gave up five unearned runs to fall, 9-5.
Still, to even get to that position Sunday, Steamboat picked up a pair of impressive wins Saturday.
The team beat Central 9-8 in the first game and 13-3 in the second game.
In the first game, Carson Becker laid down a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh to help Steamboat to the win. Brandon Clark and Colton Mahanna combined to go 7 for 8 with 6 RBIs.
In the second game, Lyon threw a complete game, three-hitter. Alan Capistron and Ryan Tibbetts went 7 for 8 with 7 RBIs.
Steamboat finished the season 11-14 overall and 11-11 in league.
"It was very successful. There was a lot of improvement," Roy said. "I saw a lot of growth in our players - a lot of maturity. ... It's a lot of commitment from the players. I'm pleased and happy with the results."
High school team wraps up summer basketball camps
The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team wrapped up its summer basketball circuit, having started to answer some lingering questions.
Although the team finished .500 at the Western State College camp and won only a couple of games at the University of Wyoming camp, coach Luke DeWolfe said he came away from the two camps with a better understanding of what type of team he'll have next winter.
He said in addition to returning guards Isiah Forsyth and Charles Wood, wing Jack Spady had a great summer and looks primed for a huge season.
"He's shaping up to be our guy as a good leader on and off the court," DeWolfe said. "He's learning both of those as he goes. In the 16 games we played, he became that leader off the court as much as things he's doing on the court."
At Wyoming, Steamboat played in the large-school bracket, meaning the team faced the biggest schools in Wyoming and Colorado.
"It's making sure we get into the gym and stay sharp with our skill sets," DeWolfe said. "We want to make sure the open-gym mentality is a mentality doesn't turn into street ball. It's a mentality that it's like we're playing during the season."
Austin Hinder named Elite 11 quarterback
Steamboat Springs High School rising senior Austin Hinder was named to the illustrious Elite 11 quarterback roster.
To qualify for the Elite 11, quarterbacks had to attend an Elite 11 regional camp or a Nike Football Training Camp.
From there, they were chosen on their performance.
Hinder, who is committed to the University of California-Berkley, was named to the team after strong camps during the spring and summer.
