Steamboat Springs Two more wins last weekend made it six in a row for the Chix with Stix women's hockey team.
The Chix are now 7-0 in their division after defeating the Northern Colorado Comets, 2-0 and 7-1.
The Comets prevented the Chix from reaching the championship game last year. Also fueling the fire, sibling rivalry saw the Chix's Sarah Fox facing off against younger sister Jessica.
Whatever the motive, the Chix played well.
"It was a very, very disciplined game," Chix coach Tim Shorland said about Friday's victory. "Everyone is learning from mistakes; it's just smart hockey."
Shorland also acknowledged Comets' goalie Elisabeth Gordon, who made 33 saves, and commended his goalie, Nikki Knoebel, for her first shutout of the season.
"Nikki had some sweet saves," he said.
All three lines found the net Saturday, starting with the first line in the first period.
Heidi Chapman-Hoy tipped it in from passes by Cathy Wiedemer and Lynne Meyers. Second-line center Melanie Nimtz added a short-handed goal assisted by Megan Palmer and later, Nimtz set up Riley Polumbus for her first goal of the game.
The third line contributed in the second period when Jen Travis found Lisa Owen, who one-timed it on her backhand for a spectacular shot over the Comet keeper's shoulder. Later, Meyers and Chapman-Hoy set up Wiedemer to give the Chix a 5-0 lead.
Gordon stopped a flurry of shots but let in two more in the third. Polumbus faced Gordon one-on-one and patiently placed the puck. Nimtz added her second goal after Sue Heineke floated her a perfect pass on a fast break. The Chix outshot the Comets 47 to 10 on Saturday.
The Chix hit the road Feb. 7 and 8 to face the Angry Beavers and Colorado College.
