Police still investigating death of Richard Lopez
Steamboat Springs police still are investigating the death of Richard Lopez, who died more than three weeks ago after he was injured in a downtown fight Jan. 2.
"We're making progress," Police Capt. Joel Rae said Tuesday, declining to elaborate. The case has yet to be turned over to the District Attorney's Office, and the suspects in Sgt. 1st Class Lopez's death have not been arrested or charged.
Lopez died Jan. 5 at a Denver hospital of serious head and brain trauma. Lopez and two friends got into the fight with two other men at Seventh Street and Lincoln Avenue, where Lopez took two hits before suffering a severe blow from hitting the back of his head on the ground, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.
Police consider Lopez's death a homicide.
The suspects have been identified by their attorney, Charles Feldmann, as "Eddie" and "David," two Florida brothers in their early 20s. In a statement released earlier this month, Feldmann said his clients only acted in self-defense.
