Australian skier Manuela Berchtold found plenty of untracked snow Monday at the Steamboat Ski Area. The same should hold true today, with the resort reporting 5 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and more expected throughout the day and night.

— A winter storm pounded Steamboat Springs and much of Routt County on Wednesday, and snowfall was forecast to continue until this afternoon.

A winter storm warning for Steamboat and surrounding areas expires at 5 p.m. today. As much as 20 inches of snow could blanket the city. The slopes of Mount Werner could see as much as 2 feet of snow from the storm.

The Steamboat Ski Area reported 8 inches of new snow as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The storm should push the ski area past the 100-inch mark for the month of January. Nearly 4 feet of snow has fallen on the summit of Mount Werner since late last week.

The additional snow adds to a relatively unstable snowpack in the backcountry. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reports a "considerable" avalanche danger in the Steamboat zone for all aspects at or above treeline. The danger is "moderate" to "considerable" below treeline.

CAIC also reported a number of large avalanches occurred Sunday in northern Routt County, particularly on and around Hahn's Peak.

Wednesday's snowstorm also made for treacherous driving conditions throughout the county. U.S. Highway 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass remained open throughout the day, but chain restrictions were in effect for all commercial vehicles, including buses and vans with capacity for 16 or more passengers.

A number of traffic accidents were reported across the county. Check Steamboatpilot.com for weather and traffic updates throughout the day.
