Search starts for high school athletic director

Richard Lee to leave position at end of March

To apply

Applicants can either submit an application through the district's Web site, at https://apps.wino... or in person to Steamboat Springs High School Principal Kevin Taulman at the high school.

— The search is on for a replacement athletic director at Steamboat Springs High School following the submitted resignation of Richard Lee.

Lee's resignation, submitted Jan. 1, is effective March 31.

"It's just the right time," Lee said about his departure. "My older son is going to be a senior in high school next year in Portland, and I'm going to go spend some time with him."

Lee has served in the administrative role for six years.

Steamboat Springs High School principal Kevin Taulman said he would like to find a permanent replacement by spring, but there may be an interim director in the meantime.

"I don't have a timetable to make a transition from Richard to the new person. It's hard to find someone mid-year," Taulman said. "We need someone who is organized, someone who is good with customers and building relationships with people."

Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said the hiring decision is up to Taulman, though she always supports hiring someone from within the district.

"We don't have an heir apparent," she said.

Because the position is administrative, the applicant also must have an administrator's license. Taulman said he would open the search process to allow feedback on potential replacements.

"All of the administration, parents, students and faculty - we'll get input from a lot of different people," he said.

Lee said he chose March 31 for his departure because "we'll have everything pretty well planned out for the following school year by then, and I want to spend time with my family."
