Moisture in Rabbit Ears snowpack 110 percent of average
Snow settling after Jan. 13 peak because of sunny days and frigid nights

Steamboat Springs The snowpack on Rabbit Ears Pass has been settling at the rate of about 1.3 inches a day since peaking at 56.6 inches on Jan. 13.
The air has been taken out of the accumulated snow after a week of strong sun and frigid overnight temperatures.
The snow at an elevation of 9,400 feet on the west side of the pass condensed to a depth of 46.5 inches as of Tuesday morning.
The water stored in the snow on Rabbit Ears now stands at 14.6 inches, 110 percent of average for the date. The moisture content has not been reduced as the snowpack settled.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction forecasts Steamboat Springs could see the return of precipitation on Wednesday with a 20 percent chance of rain mixed with snow. The chance for snow continues through Saturday.
