Extension launches new Web site, has openings

There are nine openings left for one of the Routt County Extension Office's most popular offerings: the Colorado Master Gardener Program and Colorado Gardener Certificate Training. Training begins Feb. 3 and continues for 10 consecutive weeks for a total of 60 hours of classroom instruction.

For more information, or to download an application form, visit the extension office's new Web site at: rcextension.colostate.edu. Extension Agent C.J. Mucklow said the new Web site features a calendar of events, links to Colorado State University fact sheets, 4-H enrollment, the county's "Guide to Rural Living" and more.

VNA urges residents to test homes for radon

January is Colorado Radon Action Month and residents are urged to test their homes for radon, a radioactive gas responsible for about 1,400 Colorado cancer deaths each year. The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas enters homes through cracks in the floor or spaces around utility pipes and accumulates unless properly vented. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in smokers. Contact the Routt County Cooperative Extension office at 879-0825 for a free, three-day radon testing kit.
