Sports briefs: Swiggart named player of the year

Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs director awarded national honor in age division

— Jim Swiggart, director of the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs, was awarded the 2009 Player of the Year in the 55 and older division. Former USPTA national president Joe Thompson presented the award at the USPTA-Intermountain's annual convention at the Colorado Athletic Club Inverness.

Swiggart has been ranked No. 1 in singles or doubles in respective age divisions in 14 of the 16 years he has resided in the six-state Intermountain Region. He is ranked No. 1 in Men's 55 singles.

When asked what keeps his game sharp, Swiggart said the constant threat of losing to his daughter and son keeps him practicing hard.

Chix with Stix tie and win against Colorado College

The Chix with Stix skated to a 3-3 tie and picked up a 2-0 win against Colorado College during the weekend.

On Feb. 20, the Chix trailed, 3-1, with a minute remaining in the game before Cathy Wiedemer and Shannon Young scored goals to tie it up.

Saturday, the Chix got goals from Wiedemer and Riley Polumbus and 22 saves from Nikki Knoebel to get the win.

"We were consistent with everything," Wiedemer said. "It all clicked."

The Chix are 8-3 in the B1 division of the WACH. They will play their final division games against the 7-1 Renegades on March 6 and 7. March 6 is Fan and Sponsor Appreciation Night, and snacks and soft drinks will be provided at the game. The game begins at 8:15 p.m. at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Surefoot downhill held Wednesday after delays

After two days of delays because of weather and soft snow, crew members at Aspen were able to hold two downhill races in one day for the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Tour.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club member Mary Hostetter finished third in the junior women's division in the first downhill.

Ryan McConnell finished third in the junior men's during the second downhill. Anna Marno finished second overall and first in the junior women's race in the second downhill.
