Snowmobiler injured Friday on Rabbit Ears Pass

A snowmobiler suffered non-life-threatening leg injuries Friday afternoon after an accident on Rabbit Ears Pass.

The 43-year-old Denver man was snowmobiling with three friends shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday, about five miles northwest of Dumont Lake, said Routt County Search and Rescue member Scott Havener.

"While they were riding up a hill, he encountered a windblown bowl : probably 6 to 8 feet deep, and was launched off his machine," Havener said.

The man's friends started a fire for him, and two of them headed back to the Dumont Lake parking area to lead a four-member Search and Rescue snowmobile crew back in, Havener said.

The Search and Rescue crew brought the injured man to an ambulance at the parking area by about 3:30 p.m., and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue transported him to Yampa Valley Medical Center, Havener said.
