— The Federal Aviation Administration has granted $48,693 for an improved wildlife fence at Steamboat Springs Airport.

"We have an ongoing problem with deer, elk, and other wildlife that get on the airport property," Deputy City Manager Wendy DuBord said. "This (will be) a bigger and better and more effective wildlife fence."

DuBord said the FAA grant will cover 90 percent of costs for the fence, which the Colorado Aeronautical Board is also helping fund.

"I would expect our match to be pretty minimal," DuBord said.

She said the structure likely will be an 8-foot, metal-mesh fence stretching around the perimeter of the airport property off Routt County Road 129.

U.S. Rep. John Salazar, a San Luis Valley Democrat who represents Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, touted the grant Wednesday.

"I hope this funding will help the Steamboat Springs Airport in its goal of providing adequate wildlife control and safe and efficient air service for residents and pilots in Routt County," Salazar said. "I will continue to work to provide necessary funding for projects that will improve safety for our local airports."
