Nordic team looks for strong finish

— The Steamboat Springs High School Nordic skiing team travels today to Eldora for its final competition of the season. Evidence the team has enjoyed a good season already is set in stone, however.

The team has qualified 13 racers, including all four racing for the Sailors today, to next week's state championship competition in Leadville.

There's still one huge thing to achieve.

Senior Sarah Dixson could put a stranglehold on the state Skimeister standings with a strong race.

"If she's in the top 15, I think that will do it," Steamboat coach Chrissy Lynch said. "Sarah's been skiing great the last couple of races. She has been improving (in the standings) every week while her competition has been holding steady."

The season-long Skimeister competition requires athletes to compete in the Alpine and Nordic skiing events. The final results won't be announced until the state competition.

Dixson already is a lock to ski in the classic and skate skiing portions of that event, set for Thursday and Friday.

Jack Burger, Jasper Gantick, Eva Lambek, Erik Lynch, Liza Stout and Michael Ward join her as double qualifiers.

Cassady Daley, Aleck Gantick, Katherine Lynch, Zeb Tipton and Jake Barker also qualified for the skate race. Lucy Franklin, meanwhile, will race in the classic competition.

"We really had a great year, and it's so exciting to see so many qualify for state," Chrissy Lynch said.
