Steamboat Springs The Rifle High School girls basketball team weathered the early storm, then brought a storm of its own Friday against Steamboat Springs High School.
After the Bears fell down early, they used a big second quarter to run away with a 53-45 win.
"Our first quarter, we're always a little too high, and it's helter-skelter," Rifle coach Stephanie Heald said. "In that second quarter, we calmed down and started to play our game."
Steamboat jumped out to an 8-4 lead before Rifle started its run. The Bears finished the quarter on a 10-3 run and outscored the Sailors, 14-6, in the second quarter to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.
"We turned the ball over too much and don't give ourselves opportunities to score," said Steamboat coach John Ameen, whose team committed nine turnovers in the deciding second quarter. "The defense wasn't too bad. But : we didn't give ourselves opportunities to score."
The two teams battled back and forth in the second half. Rifle led by as much as 32-17 early in the third quarter, before Steamboat (6-13 overall, 3-8 in league) battled back. The Sailors cut the lead to 32-23 late in the third quarter but never could get any closer.
Steamboat couldn't seem to get anything to go down. The Sailors shot 18 of 50 in the game and just 12 of 30 in the second half.
"When shots aren't going, it's hard to win," Ameen said. "But we come out in the first half and do things better, and that changes the complexion of the game."
Seven Rifle players scored Friday, including Kelsey Pyle (12), Cortney Cordova (11) and Tresa Berner (10).
"Lately, we've been focusing on the team game and getting everyone involved," Heald said. "I'm glad everyone was involved" Friday.
Steamboat was led by Gracie Stockdale's 16 points, while Colleen King added 10.
Rifle (14-5, 9-2) plays today against Moffat County, still with an outside shot of winning the Western Slope League title.
Steamboat, meanwhile, travels to play at 4 p.m. today against Glenwood Springs.
